Police have arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of stealing copper pipes from a primary school in Melbourne's east.
About 4.20am, police were called to the school on the Maroondah Highway in Mitcham. Local officers, the dog squad and the air wing were involved in the search for the suspects.
The two were found hiding under a school building. Police believe they cut the school's gas lines, which caused a leak that was fixed by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.
A police spokeswoman said it is likely both will be charged with burglary-related offences.
