A driver had a lucky escape from his Ford Escape after it took a plunge into Mordialloc Creek on Saturday morning.

The Hampton motorist, aged 56, had driven into a gravel car park on Main Street, near to Pompei Bridge at about 7.45 am to have a look at the moored boats.

Chelsea Police Sergeant Brad Johnstone said it was not clear exactly what happened next but the man appeared to have misjudged the tight car park and fallen into the water, clipping a nearby boat.

A passing cyclist rescued the driver.

The car fell about 1.5 metres and was beginning to sink when passing cyclists stopped to help rescue the man.

"I think he was a bit mystified himself as to how it happened," Sergeant Johnstone said.

He said there was no barrier at the "tight" car park and it dipped down towards the creek.

The car was towed from the water and police will investigate the case.
