A street-sweeper has collided with two cars in a ‘‘horrific’’ crash in Foster North, killing one of the car drivers and injuring the other.

A BMW was travelling east on the South Gippsland Highway, near Lundstroms Road, when it overtook a car on Thursday at 8.04am, said Victoria Police.

The BMW then collided with the sweeper, which was travelling west.

Following that collision, the sweeper then collided with the car that had been overtaken by the BMW.

The sweeper ended up on top of the car, crushing it and killing its driver, a Leongatha woman, 51.

The driver of the sweeper, also female, received minor injuries and was conveyed to hospital in shock. The driver of the BMW, a Port Welshpool man, 21, was hospitalised with a broken ankle.

‘‘The car has ended up under the street sweeper and the person has been trapped and deceased. It’s pretty horrific,’’ said Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen.

Investigators from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Crime Stoppers.
