The East-West tunnel blockade has finished but protesters have vowed to return on Tuesday morning and block Brunswick Street again.

"We will doorknock and gather residents' support for tomorrow's protest," said protest organiser Anthony Main.

Nearby is a test drill site for the project which is being guarded by police.

Trams and cars were backed up to the north, with trams also banked up to the south of the picket.

Cyclists, however, enjoyed a free run past the protesters.
