Elderly man dies after being hit by fire truck in Coburg

An elderly man has died after being hit by a fire truck in Melbourne‚Äôs north.

The West Preston man, 77, was struck on the corner of Nicholson Street and Moreland Road in Coburg on Thursday morning.

He received life-threatening injuries and died at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the evening, Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said.

The truck's driver was assisting police with their enquiries. 

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade has said the fire truck was not responding to an emergency when the incident happened.

Police believed the Metropolitan Fire Brigade truck was heading north along Nicholson Street and turned right into Moreland Road when it hit the man just before 10am. 

They want to speak to a female paramedic that stopped to help the man, but left before police arrived at the scene.

Ms Batty said the man was the 85th person to die on Victoria's roads this year. The 2013 road toll was 81.
