Fisherman finds body in Waranga Basin

A fisherman has discovered a body in the Waranga Basin, near where a Shepparton man recently vanished.

Police have not yet identified the body, but the the family of the missing 28-year-old have been told about the development.

The discovery was made about 9am on Wednesday, three days after a huge search for the missing man was called off.

He had been with his brother and another person when their boat's motor broke down about 1.5 kilometres from shore, near Harriman Point.

He tried to swim to shore, but stopped about 50 metres out and turned back towards the boat before going under.

Volunteer agencies, the SES, Coast Guard vessels and police had scoured the area for days trying to find him.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
