Frankston police pursuit: 'Crazy' scenes as couple flee in stolen van

A man and a woman are on the run after a police pursuit in Melbourne's south.

Motorists were forced to swerve out of the way as the stolen van sped down the wrong side of Cranbourne-Frankston Road just after 7am on Monday.

Police first noticed the couple driving a stolen white van in a shopping centre carpark in Frankston.

As officers approached the Ford Econovan, the couple fled east along Cranbourne Road.

Police followed for a short distance but the pursuit was terminated due to safety reasons, Leading Senior Constable Natalie Dean said.

Witnesses described a dramatic scene, with several motorists dodging the van as it sped down the wrong side of Cranbourne-Frankston Road towards Westernport Highway.

"It's pretty crazy at the moment ... Quite a few cars had to swerve out of the way," a caller told radio station 3AW.

The vehicle continued travelling towards Cranbourne after police called off the pursuit.

Police are still looking for the car, which has the registration number 1CK 4GD.

Anyone who sees the car can call contact Triple Zero (000).
