Geelong woman beats off three robbers with walking stick

Date

Patrick Hatch

A 57-year-old woman riding a mobility scooter used her walking stick to fight off three “cowardly” men who tried to steal her handbag.

The woman had stopped her scooter at the intersection of Bacchus Marsh and Goldsworthy roads in Corio, near Geelong, about 3.40pm on Wednesday when the three youths approached and started harassing her.

Police say the men stole a safety flag from the woman’s scooter and also tried to snatch her handbag, which was on the floor of the scooter and wrapped around her leg.

The woman beat the trio with her walking stick, forcing them to flee with only the flag.

Leading senior constable Carol Parry said the woman was extremely distressed after the robbery and described the offenders as “cowardly”.

“She’s in a scooter and appears defenceless and it turns out she was not quite as defenseless as they thought she’d be. It’s a disgrace they attacked such a soft victim,” senior constable Parry said.

“She did a wonderful job, but her walking stick came out a bit worse for wear.”

Paramedics treated the woman for back pain after the robbery.

Police have described the men as all being Caucasian and aged in their late teens.

One of the men was wearing a blue beanie, jumper and jeans, and another was wearing a red checked shirt and had a large earring.

It is not known what the third man was wearing.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the robbery to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit https://crimestoppers.com.au/.
