Geoff Shaw declares he has no confidence in Speaker Ken Smith. It follows tensions between the two MPs, which are thought to stem from Smith's decision to refer Shaw to the lower house's secretive privileges committee over the misuse of his taxpayer-funded car.

February 2014:

Christine Fyffe – who Shaw has publicly backed – becomes Speaker. Smith, in a parting swipe, labels Shaw 'unworthy'.

May 29:

The secretive privileges committee hands down its final report into Shaw's misuse of his parliamentary car. Shaw is ordered to repay an extra $6800 but the government-dominated committee's majority report finds the MP was not in contempt of parliament.

A minority report by Labor committee members concludes that Mr Shaw "wilfully" misused his parliamentary car and was in contempt of the Parliament.

May 30:

Labor says it will seek to move a motion to find Shaw in contempt of parliament. Former speaker Ken Smith says he will cross the floor to support Labor's proposed motion.

June 3:

Shaw declares he will support a no-confidence motion against the Premier and government. Premier reveals that Shaw has ridiculous demands, and he will no longer be "held to ransom" by the rogue MP. Opposition leader Daniel Andrews calls on the Premier to join him on a visit to the Governor to seek advice on resolving the "constitutional crisis".
