Hoon loses car for 190km/h on freeway

A hoon's car has been impounded after he was clocked travelling at nearly 200km/h on the Eastern Freeway at Kew early this morning.

Police from the Nunawading Highway Patrol pulled over the 34-year-old after they detected him driving at 190km/h in a 100km/h zone at 1am.

The Balwyn North man's Subaru was immediately impounded for 30 days under hoon legislation and he is expected to be charged on summons for exceeding the speed limit and speeding in a dangerous manner.

It came just hours after an elderly man was killed in a single-vehicle crash north of Geelong last night.

Police said the 77-year-old man was driving west on Fairy Street in Bell Post Hill when his car struck a tree near the intersection of Eagleview Crescent about 10.30pm. He died at the scene.

The man's death brings Victoria's road toll to 98 for the year, two more than for the same period last year.
