A three-day blitz on CBD jaywalkers has yielded police more than $44,000 in fines.

The operation, dubbed “Don’t Do Your Dash”, began on Wednesday and resulted in more than 600 fines for pedestrians walking against the red man on city streets.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Senior Constable Melissa Seach said officers issued 613 on-the-spot fines, worth $72 each.

Sergeant Mark Rose said he was concerned that many people who crossed Flinders and Spencer streets were distracted by their mobile phones or personal music players.

“We don’t want pedestrians to be injured or killed while doing something as simple as crossing the road,” he said

Police also nabbed 57 drivers for using mobile phones.

More operations targeting jaywalkers have been planned, Senior Constable Seach said.
