Voters in the marginal seat could be going to the polls as early as March 7 to elect a replacement for Labor's Dave Feeney, who resigned on Thursday after falling foul of federal parliament's citizenship fiasco.

Labor sent another clear message on Sunday that it intends to exploit the Turnbull government's unpopularity as ALP front bencher Anthony Albanese dismissed the main challenger for the seat, the Greens, as a "secret society".

Greens candidate Alex Bhathal, who is facing a move by internal party enemies to have her thrown out of the party, has still not spoken publicly, more than four days after Mr Feeney's resignation and three days after Labor announced its candidate, former ACTU President Ged Kearney.

The Greens are expected to publicly launch Ms Bhathal's candidacy in the coming days, probably in Canberra where the party leader Richard Di Natale will be for the first Parliamentary sittings of the year.

Ms Bhathal pushed Mr Feeney all the way in Batman in 2016, with the Green achieving a swing of more than 9 per cent against the incumbent.

Mr Feeney clung on to his seat only with the help of preferences from the Liberals and that party's intentions in the coming byelection has been the subject of intense speculation.

The Prime Minster told the ABC's Insiders program on Sunday said he had no say in the decision on a candidate in the byelection, but that he expected the Victorian branch to save itself the expense of participating.

"The party will make a decision, but I don't expect we will be running a candidate in the Batman by-election," Mr Turnbull said.

"Parties have to assess priorities and the limited resources.These are all political decisions."

Mr Albanese was also interviewed on television on Sunday, and continued Labor's strategy of trying to make the byelection about the Turnbull government.

"We need to put our case to the people of Batman that the election of a Labor candidate will be an important step in Labor forming government either later this year or early next year," Mr Albanese said.

With the Greens pledging to put the controversial proposed Adani coal mine in Queensland "front and centre" in their campaign for Batman, Mr Albanese followed Bills Shorten's lead and talked down the chances of the massive project ever going ahead.

"We are skeptical about the project," Mr Albanese said.

"We have been skeptical from the beginning. I have said very clearly, you won't find statements from me supporting the project, saying it is going to go ahead because I have never seen the economics of this as going ahead."
