A man was dragged from his Mercedes by a gang of men in a violent late-night carjacking in Melbourne’s north-west, police say.

The 23-year-old Caroline Springs man got into his blue 2001 Mercedes Benz after visiting friends on Ascot Street, Ascot Vale, about 3am on Sunday, police spokeswoman Melissa Seach said.

Three men are believed to have confronted the man, pulling him from the car and assaulting him, she said.

The three men then drove off in the Mercedes, which was found burnt-out in Eldridge Avenue, Footscray, about an hour later.

Police have asked that anyone who witnessed the assault or the vehicle being set on fire phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
