Police have charged a McCrae man, aged 26, over a terrifying attack on a woman on the Mornington Peninsula.

The man is in police custody, charged with intent to rape and assault.

The 28-year-old South American alleged victim was in Melbourne working as a nanny but is now returning home after being traumatised.

The woman told police she had been waiting for a bus on the Point Nepean Road on December 29 about 12.30pm, when a young man struck up a conversation with her.

She accepted a lift to a local train station but was then driven to the Arthurs Seat Lookout where she said she sat talking for some time with the man whilst looking at the view .

The woman told police that after leaving the lookout the man pulled off the side of the road, punched her in the face and sexually assaulted her.
