POLICE have charged a 24-year-old Sunshine West man with two counts of murder and one of arson following the death of a Yarraville couple on Saturday.

Ross Konidaris appeared in an out-of-sessions court hearing on Wednesday night and was remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Police said Konidaris was arrested in Yarraville on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called on Saturday when a neighbour reported a fire. The fire that destroyed the house is believed to have been deliberately lit.

On the day of the fire, Detective Inspector John Potter, of the homicide squad, described the incident as ''gruesome''.

One neighbour of the Morven Street couple, in their 70s and 80s, described them as nice people who were frail with ailing health.
