Man dies in ambulance after being detained by police

A man has died after being detained on Wednesday night in Melbourne's east, prompting a homicide squad investigation into the police involved.

Police detained the man after being called to the intersection of Martin Place and Hamilton Street in Gardenvale at 9pm. They were following up a report the man wanted to harm himself. Paramedics also attended.

The 47-year-old Gardenvale man was put into an ambulance. Police said that "as per usual practice", police accompanied the man.

Paramedics were treating the man in the ambulance but he died shortly afterwards while travelling to hospital.

The cause of death remains unclear, police said, and detectives will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The Homicide Squad investigation will be overseen by Professional Standards Command.
