Victoria has recorded its first road fatality for 2013 after a man died when his car hit a tree.
Police say a car was attempting to overtake another vehicle on the South Gippsland Highway about 3am on Wednesday when it lost lost control, travelled across the centre median strip and crashed into a tree.
The male driver of the car died at the scene.
He is yet to be formally identified.
A police spokeswoman said it was not known at this stage if there were any other occupants in the vehicle.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
The death is Victoria's ninth during the national road toll period.
