The body of a young fisherman, missing since going swimming in a lagoon in Melbourne’s outer north-east on Monday, has been found by police.

Friends and family of 20-year-old Ringwood man, Van Nei Luai Laisun, were at Wonga Park lagoon watching searchers scour the waterway for the him.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said search and rescue police found the man’s body about 2.15pm on Tuesday.

Mr Laisun was fishing with two friends in the lagoon near Heritage Golf Club before he decided to go for a swim about 5pm.

He then got into difficulties and disappeared under the surface of the water, a police spokeswoman said.

The friends’ swimming ability and the soft clay and mud hampered their efforts to save the Ringwood man, the spokeswoman said.

Mr Laisun's father, Van Bawi Thar Laisun, told Channel 7 he was a ‘‘good man’’ who loved his friends.
