Man's jaw broken in vicious coastal brawl

The homicide squad has taken over the investigation into a vicious brawl involving more than 10 men near a pizza shop in Rye.

The fight started outside a bank opposite Rye Pier about 1am on Monday, police said.

A 22-year-old from Templestowe was airlifted to The Alfred with critical injuries and a 23-year-old from Warranwood was taken to Frankston hospital with a suspected broken jaw.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward and assist them with their investigation. It is unclear if there is CCTV footage of the incident.

The homicide squad has taken over the investigation and Detective Sergeant Sol Solomon will speak to the media on Monday afternoon to provide more details about the assault.

A police spokeswoman said the squad had taken over the investigation because of the seriousness of the assault.
