A Melbourne man has died after the van he was travelling in crashed on a remote stretch of highway in South Australia’s north.

Seven other people were injured in the crash about 80km south of Marla on the Stuart Highway, which runs from Darwin to Adelaide, at 11am.

Local police said a man from Broadmeadows died at the scene.

Four people were flown to hospitals in Adelaide by the Royal Flying Doctor Service, a SA Ambulance Service spokesman said.

Two women, both aged in their 40s, suffered head injuries and were in a critical condition. A 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy also suffered head injuries and were in a serious condition.

The driver and two other passengers were taken to Coober Pedy Hospital with minor injuries.

A South Australia police spokeswoman said the cause of the crash had not been determined.
