A fire that burnt more than 500 hecatres of grassland to the north of Melbourne has been brought under control.

Country Fire Authority had issued advice to residents to leave Toolleen, east of Bendigo, as the fire burnt through paddocks. Residents from the nearby towns of Redcastle and Colbinabbin had also been advised to leave early, as the blaze traveled in a south-easterly direction.

CFA have 29 trucks and air-support on the scene.

No reports of injury or property loss were made however some livestock has died.
