A hooning motorcyclist has been caught travelling at over three times the speed limit on a busy street in Melbourne's inner-north.

Police allegedly clocked the 24-year-old travelling at 133km/h in a 40km/h zone on Lygon Street, Carlton, at about 4.20pm on Saturday.

The Carlton man was intercepted and arrested for conduct endangering life and his motorbike was impounded for 30 days.

Acting Sergeant Michael Ingram, from Melbourne highway patrol, said the man's behaviour had placed other people at risk.

"I find it abhorrent that someone would endanger other people with such stupid behaviour," he said.

The man was interviewed for a number of traffic offences and bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 25.
