Police believe the East Bentleigh man, 44, was travelling north on Portland Place when he lost control of his motorbike and struck a power pole just before 11pm on Sunday.

He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he died on Monday morning, police said.

Over the holiday period, eight people have died on the roads in NSW and Victoria, six in Western Australia, five in Queensland, four in South Australia and two in Tasmania. The ACT and Northern Territory are so far fatality free.
