Police are investigating a fatal crash in Melbourne's west on Sunday night.

A Maribyrnong man, aged 32, died when his motorcycle collided with a car in Footscray about 9.55pm.

Investigators believe the motorcyclist was travelling north in Whitehall Street when he collided with a south-bound Ford Falcon turning into Bunbury Street.

The driver of the car, a 36-year-old Wyndham Vale man, is assisting police with their inquiries.

The man is the third person to die on Victoria's roads in the holiday toll period, which runs from December 23 to January 3.

His death brings the state's toll to 242, compared with 281 for the same time last year.

Investigators are urging witnesses to come forward.

An off-duty ADF paramedic, who is believed to have stopped to assist the motorcyclist before an ambulance arrived, is being asked to contact police.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
