A high-speed car chase has ended in a crash and left the Nepean Highway at a virtual halt in the morning peak.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Julie-Anne Newman said officers first tried to stop a car they spotted driving erratically in Brighton, about 6.50am on Tuesday.
The driver sped off and a high-speed car chase began on South Road, Bentleigh.
Police were forced to call off the chase a short while later after the offender began driving on the wrong side of the Nepean Highway.
The car then crashed, and a man and a woman attempted to outrun police on foot before being chased down and arrested.
Police have confirmed the offenders were fleeing from an earlier robbery of a service station on the corner of South Road and Hampton Street, Hampton East.
A VicRoads spokeswoman said the highway was cleared later in the morning.
