A 70-year-old pilot whose single-seater aircraft crashed into a ravine north-west of Melbourne has been cut out of the wreckage and flown to hospital in a serious condition.

The plane crashed around 1.45pm near a runway at Riddell Airfield, Palmer Road, Riddells Creek.
A witness said the home-made ultra-light aircraft appeared to have taken off from the nearby Riddell Airfield before it stalled and spun into the 200 foot ravine.
A Rural Ambulance spokeswoman said the man had suffered head injuries and a fractured wrist. He was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The ravine is between Riddell and Sunbury airfields.
An ambulance helicopter is at the scene with three fire trucks and paramedics.
Emergency crews took an hour to free the pilot, who was trapped inside the wreckage.
The plane did not catch fire but CFA crews surrounded the wreckage with extinguishers.
The home-made ultra light aircraft is believed to be badly broken up and is lying on its side.
Riddells Creek is 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, in the Macedon Ranges shire.
Police are investigating the crash and said they were not sure if the plane was taking off or landing.
