Police have smashed the window of a stolen car to arrest the suspected thief.

Officers found a man from Kings Park slumped over the steering wheel of the stolen car on Sunday night in Sunshine West.

As police approached the vehicle, the man, Michael Aceski, 25, tried to drive away.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers stopped him, smashing one of the car windows with a baton and using pepper spray to arrest him.

Mr Aceski has been charged with theft of a motor car and drug-related offences.

He appeared before a bail justice in an out of sessions hearing and has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
