Environmentalists have urged Victorians to hijack a government social media campaign in an effort to show the poor condition of the state's rivers and wetlands.
Victorian Water Minister Peter Walsh has invited the public to submit Instagram photos of themselves enjoying the state's waterways, with a $1000 houseboat trip up for grabs.
But the Love Our Waterways competition could be taken over for a different purpose.
Victorian National Parks Association spokesman Nick Roberts is encouraging people to upload pictures of degraded rivers or poorly managed wetlands: ''These are the responsibility of the state government to manage.''
According to the state's latest stream condition report, three-quarters of Victoria's inland waterways are in average to very poor condition.
