Police hope three men who drove by the scene of a fatal collision in Melbourne's inner west at the weekend will have crucial information about how and why the crash occurred.
One young man, aged 22, died when the car he was a passenger in crashed into a tree on the side of Ballarat Road in Footscray about 4.40am on Saturday.
A second passenger, also a young man aged 22, was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Police spoke to the driver of the car, aged 23 and from South Melbourne, and released him pending further inquiries, a spokeswoman said.
Detectives from the major collision investigation unit want to speak to people in a white sedan driving nearby at the time. Three men of African appearance are believed to have been inside that car.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
