A suspicious fire tore through a bungalow at the rear of a house in Melbourne’s east early on Friday morning.

Six Metropolitan Fire Brigade trucks attended the blaze on Mount Dandenong Road, Ringwood East, after the property’s owners raised the alarm at 2.20am.

MFB spokesman Trevor Woodward said it took crews half an hour to control the fire, which caused extensive damage.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed the fire was being treated as suspicious and investigated by local detectives.

Nobody was in the bungalow at the time of the fire.

Meanwhile, a fire spread across two houses in Sydenham Street in Moonee Ponds about 2.10am.

Three fire trucks spent nearly two hours extinguishing the blaze, which started in the roof of one house and spread to the property next door.

Neither house was extensively damaged.
