A taxi driver has died after two cars hit a cow wandering on the road in South Gippsland early on Tuesday.
A Ford Falcon struck the cow at 4.40am when it was travelling east along Manks Road, Dalmore, between Cardinia and Koo Wee Rup.
The impact sent the cow into the west-bound lanes where a taxi struck the already injured cow. The taxi then left the road, hitting a ditch.
The taxi driver, 62, of Koo Wee Rup, died at the scene.
The Falcon driver, a Drouin man, 45, was not injured.
Manks Road was closed at Tooradin Station Road due to the collision, but VicRoads say the area is now clear.
Police say local council authorities are attempting to locate the owner of the cow.
Police want any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
The provisional road toll now stands at 59, 10 more than last year.
