A MAN is in hospital after the taxi he was in was struck by a rock in Corio in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The man and his girlfriend were passengers in a taxi travelling from Geelong to Lara on the Princes Highway, near the School Road intersection, at about 12.30am when the rock was thrown.

The man, 22, was in the front seat and received cuts to his left cheek, a sore jaw and glass shards to his eye from the attack.

The man's girlfriend and the taxi driver were uninjured.

A group of teenagers were seen in the area throwing eggs and rocks at cars, it was reported to police.

Police say "numerous patrols" of the industrial and bushland area failed to locate the group.

Police believe there were five or six teens aged about 15 to 16 years involved. They are described as Caucasian in appearance all wearing similar clothing of black shorts and white singlets.

Police are appealing for those involved to come forward.
