Two people have been charged over a hit-and-run that left a popular sports coach dead on a roadside in Melbourne's east.

The body of athletics coach Thomas Kelly, 80, of Box Hill, was found at Mt Evelyn in Melbourne's outer east last September.

Detectives from the major collision unit charged a 60-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman on Wednesday over the fatal hit-and-run.

The man has been charged with failing to stop after a collision, failing to render assistance and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The woman has been charged with two counts of accessory after the fact, two counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice, and two counts of perjury.

The pair has been released on bail and will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.
