As both major parties try to woo voters with education promises, Premier Denis Napthine pledged on Monday that every state school would be given $3000 to buy a 3D printer.

"Under a Coalition government every secondary school in Victoria, that is a government secondary school, would be given a 3D printer so these students get 21st-century exposure to new ideas and new opportunities," he told Fairfax Radio.

Dr Napthine said the printers, which would cost $2.5 million to roll out in schools, built on the government's emphasis on science and technology.

Each 3D printer costs between $1000 and $10,000, and every school will be given $3000 for the devices.

When asked if students might use the printers to print guns, Dr Napthine said: "They will be printing stuff that helps them learn, helps them develop."

He said the Coalition would match the Labor party's commitment for $120 million for capital works for Catholic and independent schools in growth and low socio-economic areas.

He hit out at Labor's promise to build 10 new technical schools for $125 million, saying the funding was inadequate and "utter nonsense".

"It was the Labor party that closed tech schools."

A fired-up Premier also accused the Labor government of cutting funding for state schools, after their promise of $510 million for government school upgrades.

"We are spending over half [a billion] in this year alone and they want to spend that over four years. What a nonsense."

At the ALP's campaign launch on Sunday, Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews unveiled a $1.3 billion education and skills package that includes $510 million to rebuild and upgrade government schools, $165 million to help struggling families pay for uniforms, excursions and camps, as well as the 10 new technical schools.

Labor's education spokesman, James Merlino, downplayed the Premier's announcement, saying a $3000 printer did not make up for four years of underinvestment in Victorian schools.

"Schools are still waiting for Denis Napthine to disclose what has happened to Gonski funding, and why he has cut Reading Recovery tutors and the Education Maintenance Allowance," he said.

"Denis Napthine continues to play catch-up on education in this state with no vision for the future of our kids."
