Werribee Secondary College responded on Tuesday by locking all of its gates.

The school, which was the scene of a violent, all-in brawl earlier this month, also told police about the alleged threat.

Principal Steve Butyn said the school was not in lockdown.

"Due to a rumour that some local young people might be coming to make trouble for some of our students, we have closed our school gates," he said.

"We have spoken to the Department and alerted the police and will not hesitate to act to ensure our students' safety."

Last week, video footage emerged of a lunchtime fight at the school between students which knocked an intervening teacher to the ground.

Mr Butyn said at the time that the behaviour was unacceptable.

"This was an isolated incident and does not reflect the ethos of Werribee Secondary College," he said.

Staff have repeatedly raised concerns with Fairfax Media about violence at the school. It is understood that there was another fight at the school on Friday and a girl was punched.

In recent years, the school has faced at least five WorkCover stress claims and three lawsuits from teachers alleging bullying and "burnout" after being given too many classes of misbehaving students.

In 2014, former teacher Peter Doulis won a landmark $1.3 million payment after suffering a nervous breakdown and developing depression while teaching at the school.

He argued that he was given an overwhelmingly heavy load of the worst-behaved classes.

The Victorian Supreme Court ruled that the school in the western suburbs breached its duty of care because it did not wind back the number of difficult classes Mr Doulis had to teach or provide adequate support.

The school divides students into streams for all subjects based on their academic performance, a practice which led to the deterioration of Mr Doulis' health.
