Police have arrested a 40-year-old man after a woman was struck by a garbage truck in Melbourne’s CBD on Sunday morning.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said the woman, aged in her 20s, was walking on the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale streets about 4.40am when she was hit by a truck.

Victoria Ambulance spokesmen Ray Rowe said paramedics found the woman in a serious but stable condition.

Police believe the truck drove from the scene, leaving the injured woman on the street.

Following a public appeal for the truck driver to come forward, police arrested a 40-year-old Wallan man on Sunday afternoon.

He is currently assisting investigators with their enquiries.
