A young woman is in hospital with serious burns after her car burst into flames at a service station on EastLink.

The 19-year-old Langwarrin woman was inside her stationary Mazda sedan in the car park of the BP service station, between Ferntree Gully Road and Wellington Road in Scoresby, when it caught on fire about 3.30pm on Saturday.

Employees from the service station and nearby takeaway restaurants rushed to help the woman and took her to a shower to treat her burns.

Ambulance crews then treated the woman at the scene before taking her to The Alfred hospital with serious burns to her legs and upper body.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said local police were investigating the cause of the explosion and the car had been towed away to be examined by chemists.

A spokeswoman for The Alfred hospital said the woman remained in a serious but stable condition.
