A woman has died after a truck collided with her car on the Northern Highway near Elmore on Sunday morning.

Police believe the women's car was travelling south on the Northern Highway when it collided with a truck heading east along Runnymede School Road.

The women, who was driving the car, is believed to be in her 70s.

A male passenger in the car was taken to the Bendigo Hospital with serious injuries.

The truck driver escaped without injury and is assisting police with enquiries.

The woman's death brings this year's road toll to four, five less than the same period in 2012.

In a separate incident a 24-year-old Daylesford woman is in an induced coma at The Alfred hospital after a crash in Hepburn Springs Sunday morning.

Police believe the driver was travelling north on Mineral Springs Road when she lost control of her car while approaching a bend, crashing into a tree on the opposite side of the road.

The woman was removed from the car and airlifted to The Alfred, where she remains in critical condition.
