A WOMAN was shot in the head and killed in broad daylight in the middle of a residential street in West Footscray on Monday.

The woman, who was in her 40s, was shot at least once by a man known to her, police believe.

The weapon was left resting on her body.

A man and the woman were heard arguing in Clive Street about 2pm before the shooting. The man, 47, was taken into custody without a struggle soon after.

Police said they were in separate cars and met in the road.

''Somehow both parties have come to be in this street. There's been an altercation. A firearm has been produced and shots have been fired which resulted in a female dying,'' Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre said.

Police had spoken to a second man, believed to have been involved in the dispute, but he was not a suspect, Senior Sergeant McIntyre said. ''Police spoke to a man who lives in the street, who may have been involved in the altercation, but we don't have full details.''

One resident told Nine Network: ''I heard gunshots going off … just went bang, bang, bang.''

Another resident told Ten Network said: ''There was arguing going on up and down the street, people in cars, and then they heard a shot and then about half an hour later there was another four shots and then the cops came.''
