Flocks of tourists with questions about their myki cards have put the brakes on a proposed $800,000 visitor information centre at Southern Cross Station.

A new tourist desk near the SkyBus terminal was trialled by Melbourne City Council between September and November this year.

But instead of touting the city's top attractions, staff and volunteers found themselves explaining the intricacies of Melbourne's bus, tram and train ticketing system.

The helpers handled an average of 50 myki-related inquiries a day, with more than 60 per cent of visitor questions about public transport in general.

Only a quarter of queries at the Western Gateway Visitor Service involved a service offered by the City of Melbourne and just a handful wanted to know about Docklands.

The council is now set to abandon an idea to build a council-run visitor centre at the station because of the volume of transport queries.

Instead, it will look to join forces with other service providers.

Council management has recommended councillors explore a joint venture with organisations such as Public Transport Victoria, SkyBus and Asset Co. The motion will go before councillors next week.

A spokesman for Public Transport Victoria said the group already had its own information centre at Southern Cross Station, but was communicating with the council.

"Public Transport Victoria is working with City of Melbourne and has established a transport lounge at the Visitor Centre at Federation Square," he said.

"PTV has hubs open at Southern Cross Station and 750 Collins Street, providing information on how to get around using public transport, from planning a journey to buying and topping up a myki."

Last month it was revealed myki-related frustrations made up 40 per cent of complaints to the Public Transport Ombudsman.

Commuters lodged 2710 complaints about myki, to do with faulty cards and machines, refunds, replacement, compensation and information in the 2013 financial year.
