In a tragic year end for two West Australian families a Perth man has been accused of murdering a two-year-old boy the night before New Year's Eve.
Wayne Murray Narkle, 22, was remanded in custody after making a short appearance in the Perth Magistrates Court on Monday.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the toddler - who has not been named for cultural and legal reasons - have not been released.
Police attended the Swan Districts Hospital where it is understood he died shortly before 11pm Sunday night.
The investigation that followed took Major Crime Squad detectives to a unit on Station Street – a small cul-de-sac - in the Perth suburb of Bassendean.
The toddler appears to be the only child of a young Bassendean mother.
"Might clean my bak yard 2night wen it's Kool set it up for my son," the young mother wrote on her Facebook wall on Saturday.
"My sons the only one in my heart the rest is empty."
The last publically visible post from the woman, who appeared to be a prolific social media user, was that her home had lost power at about 6pm on Sunday.
Mr Narkle has yet to enter a plea to one count of murder and is next scheduled to appear in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on January 30.
Police are asking for anybody with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
