Since protesters began grabbing headlines with raised hemlines and plummeting necklines in April, the global rally which aims to denounce sexual violence has been met with support in New Delhi, South Korea, Peru, London and around Australia.
Exactly eight months after the original protest took place as a reaction to a Canadian police officer telling women to "avoid dressing like sluts" to prevent rape, SlutWalk will be held in Perth tomorrow.
SlutWalk Perth coordinator Beth Castieau said that the long lead up to the local rally was to educate people about the anti-violence message and not just encourage people to unleash their inner "slut".
"We have consistently held the view that it was more important to engage in consciousness raising and education over time, to ensure that the correct message would be heard by the people of Perth and Western Australia," Ms Castieau told WAtoday.com.au.
"We did not want to simply organise a day for people to come scantily clad, with little idea of the true aims of SlutWalk and with no follow up or sustainability."
She added a lack of voluntary and community support also derailed plans for a local event.
The initial committee dwindled from 10 members in May down to just four ladies in August.
After liaising with coordinators of similar rallies in New York, London and New Zealand, Ms Castieau is expecting about 200 people to take part in Perth's inaugural SlutWalk.
A number of sex workers as well as a 72-year-old victim will join the march that will make its way through the CBD to the tune of Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made For Walking before gathering in Russell Square for a peaceful rally.
"We want society to hear the voices of these survivors, and stop women feeling fearful of dark alleyways and walking the streets at night," she said.
"We need to feel safe to report these crimes, and increase conversations about sexual violence so that victims will cease being blamed, or slut-shamed."
She added that in her experience in organising the event she found children, particularly young girls, who are abused in their home or by someone they know make up the largest group of sexual assault victims in Perth.
SlutWalk Perth will commence at Stirling Gardens at 11.30am tomorrow.
