A Fremantle-based artist will be one of 12 from around the world to have their art featured in an iconic location during the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

From this weekend, a David Spencer artwork will be the design of choice for McDonald’s hot chip containers, as part of a promotion for the 2014 World Cup for soccer.

Mr Spencer was chosen as one of the 12 from a pool of more than 500 artists to have their work featured on the packets, and will join artists from China, Germany Russia and Brazil.

However, Margaret River locals and visitors can see some of the pieces submitted to the competition in an exhibition currently on show at Hay Shed Hill winery, just north of Cowaramup.

Mr Spencer said having his work chosen was a chance for his to build on his artistic reputation and explore different styles and disciplines.

“My art practice is a simple reflection of my personality and who I am. I am constantly thinking about how I can deliver my art to the public in new ways,” Mr Spencer said.

The process took between three and four months from being notified of the marketing project, through to being selected and having his work printed on the packaging.

“I went through months of a process with the marketing group based in Chicago in the States,” he said.

“The 4am meetings were pretty heavy, especially as an artist with a young baby.

“They actually commissioned a painting, not a digital piece of art, which I did and sent to the States during the process.

“If you get along to the exhibition in Margaret River you can see some of the original concepts from that piece.”

The commercialisation of his work was not an issue for Mr Spencer, and he said he commended McDonalds for choosing the work of a fine artist over a marketing professional’s graphic design.

“Art is polarising. People will debate art in a gallery just as much as they will seeing it on."
