Camilla Parker Bowles' brother dies after fall
Mark Shand, the brother of Camilla Parker Bowles and an environmental campaigner and fundraiser, has died after sustaining a serious head injury in a fall in New York.
The royal couple said in a statement they were "utterly devastated by the tragic loss".
"Mark Shand was a man of extraordinary vitality, a tireless campaigner and conservationist whose incredible work through the Elephant Family and beyond remained his focus right up until his death," the statement added about the charity Shand had established.
Shand, 62, was taken to hospital on Tuesday night after reportedly slipping while lighting a cigarette and hitting his head on the pavement outside an after-party for a charity event.
He had been at Rose Club near Gramercy Park in Midtown Manhattan, the UK's Daily Telegraph reported.
The New York Post reported that Shand had been drinking and “had his hands in his pockets when he left the bar and fell on the sidewalk, hitting his head”.
Earlier in the evening, Shand had co-hosted an event to aid his Elephant Family charity at Sotheby's auction house. Shand was the chairman of the Elephant Family charity and is known for his work as a conservationist and travel writer.
A guest at the exclusive function said Shand "had been taking blood pressure medication and had experienced some dizzy spells".
Other guests at the charity event included designer Diane von Furstenberg, Lee Radziwill, younger sister of former first lady Jackie Onassis, and socialite Princess Ira Von Furstenberg, the Telegraph reported.
Shand is survived by daughter, Ayesha, 19, and his wife, Clio.
