PESHAWAR. A US drone fired up to eight missiles into a house near the Afghan border yesterday, killing eight suspected militants and indicating US resolve to continue with the controversial attacks despite Pakistani opposition. The strike in North Waziristan was the second such operation in a week.
The attacks come amid US efforts to rebuild its relationship with Pakistan, which in November blocked the passage of NATO war supplies to neighbouring Afghanistan. The Pakistani Parliament has called for an end to drone strikes, which many Pakistanis regard as a violation of sovereignty.
The US is unwilling to stop the attacks because they have weakened al-Qaeda and associated groups in Pakistan's tribal regions, large parts of which are not under the control of the Pakistani state.
