New Delhi: An Indian Communist party has reportedly expelled a leader after the emergence of footage showing him lying on a bed of cash.
Samar Acharjee, of the Communist party of India-Marxist in the north-eastern state of Tripura, was shown on local television channels lying on bundles of notes, with more on his head and chest.
"I am not a hypocrite like other party members," Mr Acharjee said.
"I have withdrawn 20 lakhs ($A33,730) from my bank account and fulfilled my long-cherished dream of sleeping on a bed of money," the building contractor can be heard saying on the footage, NDTV news channel reported.
"I am not a hypocrite like other party members, who depict themselves as proletariat yet have a huge amount of money," Mr Acharjee was quoted as saying.
An internal party investigation revealed that Mr Acharjee had recorded the event on his own mobile phone and the footage was leaked to local television channels by a friend.
"We do not support this kind of immoral work," state party secretary Bijan Dhar was quoted as saying.
Mr Acharjee was expelled from the party on Saturday.
