Our man in Afghanistan and his road to riches
Matiullah Khan makes millions of dollars each month charging the US and Australia to protect their military resupply convoys on the road from Tarin Kowt to Kandahar.
A NATO convoy on the road was held up by 100 ''insurgents'' last year. It was later revealed the gunmen were from Matiullah's militia, WikiLeaks reports.
There are claims Matiullah profits from the drug trade by controlling that road.
Matiullah is from the same tribe as President Hamid Karzai and is closely allied with Mr Karzai's brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, who also denies allegations of narcotics trafficking.
In April, after one of Matiullah's trucks was bombed, his men retaliated. According to the UN, armed men ''came to the suspected perpetrator's home, killed him, threw grenades into the home, and dragged his dead body behind a truck. The dead man's family was reportedly warned to leave the area.''
WikiLeaks described Dutch soldiers last year detaining two men carrying parts for home-made bombs. US soldiers identified one of them as Matiullah's brother.
