The Law Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Israrullah Gandapur, became the latest member of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to be killed by militants, when a suicide bomber struck as Mr Gandapur was greeting constituents at his house to mark the Islamic holiday.

Nine people, including Mr Gandapur, died in the attack near Dera Ismail Khan and at least 30 were injured.

''I saw so many dead people and injured people crying for help,'' Haseeb Khan told reporters, his new white holiday clothes drenched in blood. ''There were arms, legs and heads everywhere.''

Mr Gandapur is the third MP from the PTI to be killed by the Taliban since elections in May.

His death follows the assassination on Tuesday of the governor of Logar province in Afghanistan, Arsallah Jamal, who died when a bomb planted in a microphone he was speaking into exploded.

Eid al-Adha is a Muslim holiday, commemorating the prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son when ordered to by God. It is marked by the sacrifice of animals and helping the poor.

The PTI is in power in the restive north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is the strongest advocate for peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban.

On Wednesday, Mr Khan said the Pakistani government should declare a ceasefire and allow the Taliban to open an office in Pakistan through which to conduct talks with the government.

In September, an all-party conference in Pakistan gave its approval to peace talks with the Taliban, ''call[ing] upon the federal government to initiate dialogue with all stakeholders''.

But Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, also an advocate of dialogue, called off efforts to begin talks after an attack on a church in Peshawar.
