Two out of three men think women should pay their way

Two out of three men think women should help pay for a date, although most feel guilty about accepting their money, a US study suggests.

Of the 64 per cent wanting to split the bill, 44 per cent said they’d even ditch a love interest who never doled out any dollars.

That said, 76 per cent of men felt bad about pocketing payments from possible partners.

The findings, released on Saturday, are based on research led by psychologist David Frederick of Chapman University in California.

He oversaw a team that combed through data from more than 17,000 people to see how changing gender norms have impacted on time-honoured notions of courtship.

Eighty-four per cent of men, and 58 per cent of women, reported that men pay for most dating expenses, even after they’ve been going steady for a while.

Fifty-seven per cent of women claimed they had offered to pay for a date - although 39 per cent confessed they hoped the man would reject their offer to chip in.

In any event, over time, the vast majority of participants, both male and female, said they shared dating expenses in the first six months of seeing someone exclusively.

Frederick, whose previous research has focused on body image, said the study was motivated by a desire ‘‘to understand why some gendered practices are more resistant to change than others’’.

It was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association that opened in New York on Saturday and runs through to Tuesday.

  • This is in America. Seems very different in Australia - and happily so.

Easiest way is to rotate who pays for the dates, much nicer than going Dutch.

    • We don't have equality men in most fields are paid more Han men. In my relationships though have always offered to pay. Now married we take it in turns. So if pay was equal it would certainly be good enough for goose as well as the gander.

          • I found a girl who would go dutch with me and I married her promptly. We built a home, a family and investment portfolio together. The girlfriends I had before my wonderful wife were only prepared to help me build debt (in my name) as I stroked their ego and make them feel "special".

            • First date, man should pay, every date after that it's 50/50. Seriously, it's not that difficult. Until you get married (hehe).

              • Waiting for my equal pay...if I pay though, how do you justify not cuddling??? what the gander wants the goose isn't giving...
Paying for the date is the reason I hear men giving for expecting "more".

                • Well now that's fair enough. We all have jobs and earn the same amount of money so why not? Personally I prefer to pay my own way so I don't feel I owe anybody although shouting each other every now and again is nice.
