Leo Carvalho was taken into custody on Friday afternoon, after the 71-year-old tried to prevent a truck carrying a skip bin full of asbestos material from leaving a Lyons street, his son Ben Carvalho said.

Police were initially called to 4 Barrow Place on Thursday after Leo Carvalho tried to stop contractors accessing his neighbour's house about 7am.

The grandfather had vowed to stand in the way of the trucks until the ACT Asbestos Taskforce addressed concerns around how the demolition was being carried out, but Ben Carvalho said the situation was defused after residents were promised contractors would start work on the site later in the day, at 10am.

However the family claim they woke at 7am on Friday to find workers moving in.

Ben Carvalho alerted his parents and Leo Carvalho tried to stop a truck loaded with the skip from leaving until a representative from the CFMEU arrived.

But Leo Carvalho, who said on Thursday he was willing to be arrested to protect his family and the workers from being contaminated by the deadly asbestos, made good on his promise and was led away by about seven officers, his son said.

An ACT Policing spokeswoman said the 71-year-old man was arrested for obstructing access to premises after they were called to a disturbance at the Lyons house.

He was charged late on Friday and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date, she said.

A spokeswoman for WorkSafe ACT said two inspectors had found no issues when they attended the property on Friday as part of routine checks.

Speaking on behalf of the CFMEU, UnionsACT secretary Alex White said a union was called to the site by a member of the public during a demonstration.

He said the incident reinforced calls for a temporary suspension of all Mr Fluffy demolition work while there was an investigation into looting allegations to give the public confidence about the safe removal of asbestos and affected material.

The dispute between Leo Carvalho and the ACT Asbestos Taskforce erupted over concerns correct safety protocols weren't being followed in the demolition of two Mr Fluffy houses neighbouring his own Olympus Way home.

In allegations first aired by The Canberra Times on Sunday, neighbouring residents said they watched with alarm on Thursday, April 28, as a team of men wearing no protective equipment broke through the front door with a sledgehammer and crow bars to begin internal preparatory works such as ripping out cupboards, fixtures and carpets from 4 Barrow Place.

The ACT Asbestos Taskforce held a kerbside meeting with concerned residents on Friday, April 30, but Leo Carvalho said the issues they raised hadn't been addressed.

The Carvalhos - who live in a Mr Fluffy house formerly owned by Mr Fluffy himself, Dirk Jansen - said they would continue their protest against the demolition despite Leo's arrest.

"I'm absolutely disgusted. It's absolutely atrocious. It's unconscionable they can do this to another human being," Ben Carvalho said.
